Charles Tyrwhitt is a British menswear retailer founded in 1986, known for its high-quality shirts and commitment to exceptional customer service. With over 34 stores across the UK, a growing US presence, and a major distribution centre in Milton Keynes, the company operates across retail, e-commerce, and logistics.

The leadership team recognised that Microsoft 365 skill levels — particularly in Excel — weren't where they needed to be. Staff across the business were using Excel daily, but many lacked the knowledge to use it efficiently. Time was being lost to manual processes, inefficient workarounds, and underutilised features.

With teams spread across head office, retail stores, and the Milton Keynes depot — including management, sales, marketing and warehouse staff — any training programme needed to accommodate different skill levels, different roles, and different locations.

We designed and delivered a tailored Excel training programme that met staff where they were, with content directly relevant to their daily work.

Skills Assessment

Before training began, we used assessment tools to identify current skill levels across the organisation. This allowed us to group staff by existing Excel knowledge and experience — ensuring nobody was bored by basics they already knew, or overwhelmed by advanced content they weren't ready for.

Scenario-Based Training

Rather than teaching Excel features in isolation, we built training around real workplace scenarios. Staff could immediately recognise how the skills applied to their actual work — whether that was sales reporting, inventory management, marketing analysis, or operational planning.

Flexible Delivery

Training was delivered both on-site at the Milton Keynes depot and online via Teams. This hybrid approach meant staff from all areas of the business could attend — management, sales, marketing and warehouse teams — without requiring everyone to travel or disrupting operations.

Programme Expansion

Following the success of the initial Excel programme, training was extended in two directions: more staff were enrolled in Excel sessions, and we developed additional PowerPoint training specifically for the marketing team to help them create more engaging presentations.

The feedback was exceptional. When asked whether the trainer communicated and explained the skills in an understandable way, 100% of attendees gave a perfect score of 5 out of 5.

Staff left each session with practical skills they could apply immediately. The scenario-based approach meant there was no gap between learning and doing — techniques learned in the morning could be used that afternoon.

The success of the programme spoke for itself. What started as targeted Excel training expanded to include more participants and additional applications, with the marketing team now equipped to deliver more polished, engaging presentations in PowerPoint.

Across the organisation, individual performance with Excel improved — and with it, efficiency and time savings compounded across teams.
